Porc Manor Site Plan Update

Sorry I haven't been managing this site as well as I should have, but I've been very busy with other more pressing matters. I did just approve a couple of comments from new posters and squashed a couple of spam comments that made it through the anti-spam controls.

I have been doing some looking around for someone else to take over this site. It doesn't generate much income, but if properly run and promoted it could not only provide a little additional income to someone but also counts as some sort of activism. If you're interested, let me know.

I've had a general plan for what needs to be done with the site, but I haven't had time to work on it. Maybe I will in the future, but I'm not counting on it.

The plan

  • Upgrade the site to Drupal 7. (Several days work as there's some custom code and of course testing will be needed.)
  • Reconfigure some things to make it easier to use for both landlords and prospective renters. (The D7 upgrade will help with this.)
  • Try to figure out why the database sometimes gets corrupted. (Again, upgrades might fix this.)
  • Improve the forum section.. Right now its the basic Drupal forum code, but there's additional modules that can make it look and work more like an advanced forum.
  • Create a better theme. This one is a standard theme, and isn't all that good looking.
  • More fully automate the landlord subscription process.
  • Work with the Facebook housing groups and create one for Google+. Maybe add Twitter or other social networks.
  • Start promoting it more on FB, G+, and some of the forums like the FSP, NHFree, NHLA, and ShireSociety forums.

It has also been suggested that more information could be added to the site, such as local tax info and search guides. That's a lot of work, but in general a good idea.

Right now we have 17 landlords listing here, so at our current fee that's $17/month of income. Adding new landlords should be on the to-do list of anyone taking over this site. The ad revenue is pretty small - figure maybe $5/month, although that could be improved as well.

If no one steps up to take it over, I might get around to making these changes or I might let the site drop when the domain name expires. I haven't decided yet. But that won't happen for many months. If you're a porcupine with some web skills (or the ability to pay someone with them) and would like to take this site over, please contact me.
